From Prototype to Scalable Microfluidic Manufacturing

Many custom microfluidic devices are initially developed using PDMS or microfabrication techniques. While these approaches enable rapid prototyping, they become difficult to scale for commercial production.

Micromolds supports the transition from early microfluidic prototypes to thermoplastic microfluidic chip manufacturing using micro injection molding.

Why Injection Molding for Microfluidics?

Stable production processes

Injection molding enables repeatable manufacturing of micro-scale channel structures.

High replication accuracy

Microfluidic channels and features can be reproduced consistently across large production volumes.

Scalable manufacturing

Thermoplastic microfluidic chips can be produced from small pilot batches to high-volume production.

Lower cost at volume

Injection molding significantly reduces cost per chip compared to prototype fabrication methods.

Thermoplastic Materials for Microfluidic Chips

Material selection strongly influences microfluidic device performance, including chemical compatibility, optical properties and bonding behavior.

Common thermoplastics used for microfluidic chip manufacturing:

  • COC / COP – optical clarity, low autofluorescence

  • PMMA (Acrylic) – optical transparency, microchannel visualization

  • Polystyrene (PS) – biological compatibility

  • Polycarbonate (PC) – mechanical strength and durability

Material selection depends on channel geometry, bonding method and device requirements.
